Jamdani is a painstaking weaving technique in which the coloured threads are hand-inserted by shuttle along each single line of weaving. It is like embroidery, patterning threads are inlaid one by one.
Bengal weavers were patronized by Mughal emperors and Indian royalty for the extremely fine cottons they achieved by hand spinning and hand hand spinning and weaving.
They were known as “woven winds” and “morning dew” for the almost transparent fineness of this luxury cotton.
